Trade of The Week: A Tale of Two Pyramids

Posted on 06:51 by Unknown

As it's the last day of 2012, this "Trade of The Week" feature might be better titled "Trade of The Year", but I'll stick with the usual title so as not to confuse you into thinking it was the best trade of the whole year. And in fact it's two trades, not one.

Readers of my Position Trading book will know that one of the seven pillars of position trading (or at least my interpretation of it)

High Performance Trading (with Steve Ward and InterTrader)

Posted on 10:14 by Unknown

I wonder what you got for Christmas? A surprise present that arrived for me just before Christmas was a copy of Steve Ward's book High Performance Trading, courtesy of InterTrader.

It's fortunate -- and more than a little surprising -- that I didn't already own a copy of this book, because I was well aware of it. I remember talking with Steve Ward at a trading conference, at a time when his

"Bonus" Trade of The Week on Regal Petroleum

Posted on 07:24 by Unknown

Yesterday I told you how difficult it was to choose a "Trade of The Week" example because I was spoilt for choice. And so today, here is a "bonus" trade of the week on Regal Petroleum. Well, it is nearly Christmas.

You might have noticed that the share price has been up and down like a yo-yo over the past few days, as shown in the InterTrader chart below. Between Friday 14 December and Monday

Trade of The Week on Centamin

Posted on 04:48 by Unknown
Choosing the example for this week's "Trade of The Week" feature wasn't easy. Not because there were no good ones to choose from, but because there were too many to choose from. I've chosen Centamin, not only because it's been an "exciting" (read "volatile") stock of late, but because it provides me a chance to remind you how ETX Capital charts can helpfully show your "in play" trades along with

Has Santa Claus come early?

Posted on 11:53 by Unknown

You have no doubt heard of the Santa Claus rally; the tendency for shares to rise in the second half of December in anticipation of new money coming into the markets in January. Well, I'm wondering if Santa Claus has come early.

After trading sideways for a couple of months, then dipping downwards, the FTSE 100 has appreciated by about 6% over the course of the month from mid-November to

My 2012 Christmas Wish: Trailing Guaranteed Stop Orders

Posted on 07:28 by Unknown

You know how sometimes the spread betting companies ask for feedback on what features you would like to see introduced? Well, here is the suggestion that would be top of my Christmas 2012 wish list:

Guaranteed Trailing Stop Orders

After something of a love-hate relationship with them, I have once again become a fan of guaranteed stop orders. Top marks to the spread betting companies such

Trade of The Week: Two-Bagging Thomas Cook

Posted on 23:19 by Unknown

Do you remember that a couple of months ago I talked about the "flatliners" -- those stocks that have fallen a long way over a long period of time and whose price is just bumping along the bottom now that all the sellers have sold and no-one (for the moment) wants to buy?

One such flatliner that I identified on 15 November was Thomas Cook. I took a punt at 20.9p-per-share, and I was pleased

If someone is discouraging you from doing something, you should probably be doing it!

I received emails from the various London Capital Group spread betting brands (including Capital Spreads and InterTrader) to say that they will no longer be offering UK ex-350 shares except on a subscription basis. I like these spread betting brands, I really do, but it presents me with a bit of a problem in my preferred position trading strategy. So thank goodness that IG (and possibly SpreadEx

Trade of The Week: Tesco

Posted on 07:31 by Unknown
What was the most important news story today (5 December)? Was it something in George Osborne's autumn statement? No, it was the news that Tesco is thinking about pulling the plug on its loss-making Fresh & Easy chain in the USA.

This was good news because it caused the Tesco share price to "gap up" this morning, thereby allowing me to raise my guaranteed stop order to a level that guarantees

Introducing Direct Market Access (DMA) Spread Betting

Posted on 01:31 by Unknown

Recently I've been trialling Direct Market Access (DMA) spread betting, of the kind offered by ISE Spreads and a few other providers.

DMA spread betting has the same benefits as conventional spread betting: the ability to go long and short with equal ease, access to numerous international markets, the advantage (and risk) of leveraged trading, and tax-free* profits.

Eurasian Natural Resources: To Buy or Not To Buy?

Posted on 07:03 by Unknown
Over at The Motley Fool, Rupert Hargreaves has pondered whether Eurasian Natural Resources is a good buy (or a "goodbye" -- my pun, not his) at today's ~270p-per-share. Fundamentally (another pun) he thinks it's not a good buy.

Meanwhile over at Spreadbet Magazine, ENRC was listed as a "Conviction Buy" at 334p-per-share at the end of last month, so presumably it's even more of a "conviction

I noticed that one of the casualties of today's heavy sell-off was the London Capital Group. A quick look at its longer-term price chart (see below) caused me to notice also that it might now be categorised as one of the Flatliners.

You Can Never Have Too Many Spread Betting Accounts!

The sensationalist headline "You Can Never Have Too Many Spread Betting Accounts!" is not exactly true, of course, because too many accounts can become unmanageable and time-consuming. Trade of The Week: Sometimes It Pays to Average Down!

Posted on 06:19 by Unknown
Most seasoned spread bettors and other traders will tell you that it is usually a bad idea to "average down" by adding more funds to a losing position, despite the obvious temptation to lower your overall purchase cost and therefore to break-even much sooner. Trading the Price Pendulum

And now for something a little different.

My latest article over at TRADERS' Magazine is titled Trading the Price Pendulum. It draws on the idea of a pendulum as an analogy for the way markets move: swinging from bearish to bullish and back again, gaining momentum and then losing it again, meeting support and resistance at the extremes, and notionally representing "fair value" in the middle.

I've featured Cape as my "Trade of The Week" before, and now I feature it again because I've closed the  trade with the result as shown in this IG Index P & L Breakdown Report:

This report, which is one of the things I like about IG Index, shows how the position trade ran for about six weeks to generate a £68.03 capital profit (P/L) plus £4.50 in Dividends (yes, you get them on spread bets)

An Alternative Equity Curve

Posted on 05:25 by Unknown
There are a few different ways of showing the performance of your investment portfolio, including as a traditional "equity" curve that shows how the total value of your portfolio has fallen or risen over time.

The problem is that this kind of equity curve is only really representative if you deposited an initial some which you never added to or took away from during the life of the equity curve.

A Grand Day Out at RPD FX (and ETX Capital)

Posted on 11:11 by Unknown
It's not very often that I talk about Foreign Exchange (Forex or FX) trading, but this may be about to change as I am embarking on the writing of a new book. Let's call it "Project X", or (even better) "Project FX".

As part of my "research" I was invited down to the offices of foreign exchange trading provider RPD FX in the City of London. If you've never heard of them, don't worry, because

Trade of The Week: Inmarsat

Posted on 01:57 by Unknown
This week's featured "Trade of The Week" is on Inmarsat, the Capital Spreads chart for which is shown below. You can see how I established a new long position at a price of 528.3 on 3 August, and how this position is nicely in profit at the time of writing on 6 September. This position trade is protected by a profit-locking guaranteed stop order, so now I really can't lose, and on Capital Spreads

Deals, Dividends and Deductions

Posted on 03:58 by Unknown
In this update I'd like to remind you of how your spread betting ledger cash balance -- which is not the same thing as you overall portfolio valuation, or your available trading funds -- is affected by three kinds of transactions: deals, dividends, and deductions.

Deals

In one of my spread betting accounts I closed several positions that I didn't wish to keep alive because the stop orders on

Fancy a Trip to Las Vegas?

Posted on 13:13 by Unknown
No, I'm not offering a trip to Las Vegas; nor have I taken such a trip recently except in the metaphorical sense that I will allude to shortly. But my attention-grabbing headline is relevant.

All financial speculation is a gamble, whether it is the noble art of serious "investing" or the more "risky" (apparently, but I don't believe it) pursuit of leveraged trading with spread bets or CFDs.

Removing Currency Exposure with Spread Betting

Posted on 09:52 by Unknown
It's a short update today because, well, I do have a life.

I wanted to highlight the fact that spread betting removes currency exposure from your trading. British spread bettors can bet on a US (or other country) stock or index, or a dollar-denominated commodity, without worrying about their "investment" falling merely as a result of the fluctuating GBP / USD exchange rate. Let the spread

Trade of The Week: The Cape Caper

Posted on 03:32 by Unknown
A few weeks ago at the beginning of August, Cape shares slumped by some 40%. I went in at my token £1-per-point (long), with a guaranteed stop order in place just in case the worst should happen (again) shortly afterwards. The worst didn't happen, and in fact the best happened, with the share price up at around 230p-per-share this morning (30 August) relative to my buying price of 176.56 in an IG

A "whipsaw profit" in the making on Chemring?

Posted on 09:26 by Unknown
In my Position Trading book I raise the possibility of notching up whipsaw profits by employing guaranteed stop orders. These are 'notional' profits (i.e. avoided losses) that accrue when the spread betting company is obliged to stop you out at your guaranteed stop order price at a time when you can re-purchase immediately at the more favourable gapped-down price in expectation of a subsequent

Trade of The Week: Bottom Fishing for Borders and Southern

Posted on 12:29 by Unknown
On 16 July, oil company Borders and Southern Petroleum gapped-down massively from about 60p-per-share to less than 20p-per-share. Pity the fools who were holding a large position through this gap-down, which all goes to show why it is important to diversify or to employ guaranteed stop orders.

So, what did I do immediately after the share price gapped down? Why, I bought in, of course, two days

Spread Betting for Cautious Investors

Posted on 11:26 by Unknown
I know that many "cautious" investors are put off spread betting because they perceive (or are encouraged to perceive) it as dangerous gambling. I think they're wrong, and that spread betting need be no more dangerous than any other form of stock trading and investing.

Look at it this way:

If you invest £1000 in (for example) Barclays Bank shares at 200p-per-share, you're risking £1000.

Trade of The Week: Textbook Pyramiding of Home Retail Group

Posted on 06:30 by Unknown
This week's "Trade of The Week" is a really interesting one because it provides an almost textbook example of pyramiding into a trending stock. (If you're wondering which textbook I'm referring to, I mean my Position Trading book, of course)

The IG Index chart (aren't they great?) illustrates it nicely:

The Upside / Downside of Diversification

Posted on 10:19 by Unknown
Over on The Motley Fool (for whom I used to write), Malcolm Wheatley asks How much diversification is enough?

First of all, I think there are two reasons to diversify:

On the downside we need to diversify to spread our risk, because any stock can suffer a sudden collapse and take much of our portfolio value with it. If we're going to take Warren Buffett's alternative advice to "put all our

An Example of How to Average Down (Safely)

Posted on 08:30 by Unknown
One of the golden rules of trading and investment is to never average down, despite the fact that logically this should lower your average purchase price thereby enabling you to break-even much sooner. As I see it, the problems with "averaging down" are twofold:

1) If you're not careful, averaging down on your falling stock positions can attract all of the cash away from your profitable

Trade of The Week: Trendy Tesco

Whoever thought I'd find myself describing Tesco as "trendy"? The trendiness of Tesco will not have been helped by it reportedly receiving an investment not so long ago from Warren Buffett -- who is probably one of the least "trendy" people on the planet (no offence)! The last time I wrote about Skyepharma was over at Financial-Spread-Betting.com in my article titled Reaching for the Skye! I described how I had secured a £45 (but it could have been £450 or £4500) profit thanks to the meteoric rise of Skyepharma shares in April 2012.

Oops, I did it again!

I've not yet done it again, but I'm doing it again.

Horses for Courses: Which Spread Betting Company?

Over on my "Talk with Tony" page, Martin asked me an interesting question about which spread betting company I would choose as a preference. He asked...

Guaranteed Stop Orders on the New Spread Co Platform

Posted on 01:34 by Unknown
Jump straight to the book, or...

Historically I was never a big fan of the Spread Co spread betting platform. As far as I can recall, this was because of difficulties in attaching stop orders -- and in particular, guaranteed stop orders -- to specific trades, which is an essential aspect of my position trading strategy.

With Spread Co having launched a brand new online trading platform, I've

Another Look at SpreadEx

Posted on 22:00 by Unknown
Jump straight to the book, or...

I don't use the SpreadEx spread betting platform as much as I use some of the others, and this may be because I have somewhat outgrown it. This may be a compliment rather than an insult, however, because I remember how much I liked the simplicity of SpreadEx when I was starting out with spread betting. In this context I can report that their new platform is very

World Spreads and the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS)

Today I was pleased to receive an email from the Financial Services Compensation Scheme (FSCS) with a claim form attached. If you've not received yours by 6 July, and if you are owed less than £50,000 by the spread betting company formerly known as World Spreads (or one of its former "white label" brands like Ladbrokes), then I understand you should call the FSCS

If you've read my Better Spread Betting book, you will already know that Capital Spreads is one of my favourite spread betting companies. And now Money AM readers have declared it to be the Best Mobile / Online Trading Platform.

You can read my blog posts about Capital Spreads, and don't forget that I also like some other spread betting companies.

Trade of The Week: Ocado

Posted on 07:06 by Unknown
Jump straight to the book, or...

Unusually for me, this week's trade of the week is a short trade. I took inspiration to engage in a little more short trading from "Evil Knievel's Guide to successfully shorting stocks" in Issue 03 of Spreadbet Magazine. Not that he recommended this particular trade, but the article did remind me how my preferred position trading spread betting strategy can be

It didn't make the deadline for the first publication of my Better Spread Betting book, but here's what Ajay Pabari, Founder and CEO of Spread Co said in response to my question "If you could give just one piece of advice to a spread bettor, what would it be?”:

Thanks, Martin, but unfortunately your cheque is not in the post.

Anyway, his question was:

Balance-Affecting Transactions in Spread Betting

There are various events that affect the cash balance in your spread betting account, including:

the profit or loss from closing a position
an adjustment for a dividend
the debiting of overnight financing (rolling) charges

To show what these balance-affecting transactions look like, I took a 24-hour snapshot from an IG Index account (although it could have

Profitable Pyramiding

Readers of my Better Spread Betting, Position Trading and Stop Orders books will know that I am inclined to try and pyramid profitable positions to higher stakes. Readers of my Better Spread Betting, Position Trading and Stop Orders books will know that I am predominantly a long trader; and some of you might be wondering why. It's not for any moral reasons (e.g. "short selling is bad") but for the following reasons:

In the long run, stock markets generally rise, but I wouldn't read too much into this.

Selling the Spread Betting Sausage (not the Sizzle)

There's a well known saying in sales and marketing circles, which is...

"Sell the sizzle, not the sausage!"

The temptation when writing and marketing any book is to make outrageous claims that will have potential readers chomping at the bit to get their hands on the book.

Making A Little Money Go A Long Way

Jump straight to the book, or...

Sometimes people ask me how much money they need in order to begin financial trading.

In a regular stockbroker share dealing account it's quite a lot, because you probably need to "invest" at least £1000 in any one share in order to overcome the fixed buying and selling fees of (let's say) £10 each way. Those round-trip fees would account for a massive 8% loss

As advertised in The Sunday Times

Posted on 16:30 by Unknown

Financial spread betting offers a potentially tax-free way of buying and selling (including short-selling) stocks, stock indices, commodities and currencies. It can be more cost-effective than share dealing in a traditional stockbroker account, and it need not be any more dangerous.

Most spread bettors lose money, and many of them give up after only six months. You don't need to be one
